Description of Ocean View, Norfolk
Ocean View is an established neighborhood where builders continue building new construction properties. A new home here is a frequent sight and is in good company. Coastal living is a prevalent theme as well as traditional, Cape Cod and transitional styles of architecture. Perched at the north end of Norfolk, VA, this area borders the majestic Chesapeake Bay. It is a breeze getting to other parts of Hampton Roads from this location. Military bases like Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and Naval Station Norfolk are just a few minutes away.
In the 1850s, Ocean View City (as it was originally called) was developed with streets by an engineer named William Mahone. A railroad service was later set up to deliver passengers. Later still, electric trollies were used. In the late 1800s, an amusement park complete with boardwalk was built, as this vicinity was becoming a popular local tourist spot. In 1957, the construction of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel helped join south Hampton Roads with the Peninsula but that caused many drivers to pass Ocean View by and head straight for Virginia Beach. The fifties and sixties were not kind to Ocean View and its properties so in the 1970s, the Ocean View Amusement Park was torn down. The late 1900s continued the downward spiral for this area of Norfolk as crime moved in and a new home was not easily found here during this time.
As in many parts the country; Ocean View was bit by the revitalization bug around the beginning of the 21st century. Old eyesores were torn down and appealing, new construction was built. If a dilapidated house came down, one could count on a nice, new home coming soon. Hurricane Isabel destroyed the fishing pier in 2003. Now the new Ocean View Fishing Pier is a great place to catch dinner. Pretty properties line the streets in the way of shops, new home communities and upscale condos. Criminals left and families moved in. Now that’s taking back the neighborhood. Today, golfers can play a round at the Ocean View Golf Course and beachcombers can walk the sands of Sarah Constant Beach Park.
Wanting new construction properties doesn’t necessarily mean settling in a planned community. Homebuyers who like this section of Virginia can build a new home on an available lot and still get all the amenities that come with living in this part of town. Reshape a neighborhood and feel cool bay breezes every night- live in Ocean View.
