Having Fun on the Fourth of July in the Rain

Don't let Hurricane Arthur ruin your Fourth of July! Even if rain and wind comes to Hampton Roads, fun can still be found at home on this holiday. So while you may need to batten down the hatches and stay put, Independence Day can still be enjoyable.

Ideas for making the most of a rainy Fourth of July include:

  • Having a carpet picnic. Forgo the usual picnic setup and bring traditional eats to a blanket on the floor. Spread out everything, give thanks for living in this free country and then dig in! A great thing about this type of picnic is there won't be any ants.
  •
  • Playing games. Now these don't have to be just the regular board games either, although those can be fun too. Clean out the garage or basement and have potato sack races, three-legged races and play whiffle ball. Darts and indoor bowling sets can provide amusement as well.
  •
  • Offering homemade treats. Popcorn balls, marshmallow treats, cupcakes and more make a welcoming display. Guests may have trouble deciding which is more fun- baking these treats or eating them!
  •
  • Doing crafts. Grab glitter, scissors and paper to make Fourth of July decorations and favors. Let the kids unleash their creative juices while making patriotic souvenirs.
  •

The Fourth of July can be just as fun indoors as out, when you prepare your home ahead of time. Residents of Hampton Roads know that it takes more than a hurricane to keep them from celebrating!
