What Will You do This Memorial Day in Hampton Roads?

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer, and in Hampton Roads there is no shortage of things to do! Whether you decide to go out or stay home with the family, you can enjoy this fun time of year, remember those who've sacrificed their lives for our country and appreciate living in southeast Virginia.

The 24th Annual UMOJA Festival is a free event in Portsmouth that encourages harmony among cultures. The 31st Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival is also held this weekend. This Virginia Beach festival is great for those who love the delicious, red fruit as well as anyone who wants an enjoyable time. Salute to Summer consists of live entertainment at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. The 130th Portsmouth Memorial Day Parade is held Monday; it's a been a local tradition since 1884.

If you plan on avoiding crowds, staying home is a viable option. Host a barbecue, and grill foods associated with summer. Organize a block party; this is a great way to meet new neighbors and keep up with those you don't see so often. Pop some popcorn and watch a patriotic movie with friends; The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan and Captain America: The First Avenger are good choices. Finally, proudly display the American flag. If you don't have a flagpole, now's your chance to install one.

Before summer begins, take a few days to revel in the good things life offers: freedom, opportunities and happiness. Then decide what you'll do to celebrate Memorial Day in Hampton Roads.
