Hampton Roads Offers Summer Fun in August

It's not too late for summer fun in Hampton Roads! Although August often brings those dog days of summer, it also brings opportunities for good times with family and friends. While there are the usual museums, movie theaters and attractions that residents can easily pass the time in, there are some unexpected places where summertime can be enjoyed.

It's crabbing season in the Chesapeake Bay. Hungry diners don't need to know how to operate a crab trap because these critters are readily available. August is the perfect time for seafood lovers to wet their appetites with the tempting taste of regionally caught blue crabs. Check out two events in Hampton Roads devoted to serving up this local favorite. AT&T Crab Feast Fridays will be held during this month at the TowneBank Fountain Park in Norfolk. The fifth annual Blue Crab Festival is an affair held at the Khedive Shrine Temple in Chesapeake. Proceeds from this event help the South Norfolk Ruritan Club support their charitable activities. Summer fun never tasted so good!

While it may be too hot for some athletic pursuits, southeast Virginia is a perfect destination for spectator sports. Try to catch a home run ball at a Norfolk Tides game this month. Race fans can head over to Langley Speedway in Hampton. The East Coast Surfing Championships begin August 20, for those who like the sun and sand. Watch games at the 16th annual Neptune Soccer Classic at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach starting August 4. Summer may be winding down, so take advantage of all the fun things to do this month.
