Military Bases
The following is a brief overview of the largest of Hampton Roads’ military facilities:
Norfolk Naval Station
Norfolk Naval Station is home to the largest naval complex in the world. Located in the city’s northwest corner - nearby are two of the nation’s most prestigious commands – U.S. Joint Forces Command and NATO’s Allied Command Transformation.
Oceana Naval Air Station
Oceana hosts most the Navy’s F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets on the East Coast and is just miles from the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
Norfolk Naval Shipyard
Norfolk Naval Shipyard is one of the few public yards still around in the United States. Located along the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, the Navy repairs everything from a broken barge to a cranky aircraft carrier’s engines in this location.
Langley Air Force Base
Langley is the first home to the new F-22 Raptor and is the oldest continuously active air base in the U.S. Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base This base was created at the beginning of World War II and straddles the Norfolk and Virginia Beach city lines.
Oceana Annex, Dam Neck
Located on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront, Dam Neck has become a site for many of the Navy’s educational courses for new sailors.
Naval Security Group Activity Northwest
Close to the North Carolina state border in Chesapeake, this is a high-security intelligence base that monitors radio and other communications traffic from around the world.
Yorktown Naval Weapons Station
This is the Navy’s arms market. Typically, all but the largest ships go there for missiles, bullets, rockets and bombs.
Fort Eustis
On the the north bank of the James River, this Newport News installation is port for the Army’s fleet of small ships.
Fort Story
This was first a coast artillery post. It is now a sub-installation of Fort Eustis at Cape Henry.
Camp Pendleton State Military Reservation
On the oceanfront, it serves as the Virginia National Guard’s summer training camp and is primarily used as an air defense artillery range.
Fort Monroe
In the city of Hampton, It is the largest stone fort ever built in the country. It is now headquarters to the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command.
Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Pormouth
On the Elizabeth River, this base is home to the majority of the Coast Guard’s area cutters and patrol boats near Craney Island. Located just five miles south in downtown Portsmouth are the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area and 5th District Headquarters.
