The current city of Poquoson is a remnant of a larger area known from the first days of settlement in the early 17th century by English colonists as the New Poquoson Parish of the Church of England. Named by the local Native American tribes that inhabited the area prior to colonization and the arrival of the English in the 17th century, Poquoson is one of the oldest continuously named cities in Virginia and roughly translates to "great marsh" or "flat land."
