Ghent is located in the city of Norfolk and is one of the most historic and preserved communities remaining in the city. Ghent was originally farmland know as Pleasant Point, but the name was later changed to Ghent in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. Ghent began its development in 1890 and most of the housing units had been built by 1907. Since the majority of the community was developed within 15 years, the community has very consistent architecture and landscaping. The community of Ghent covers nearly 80 acres with waterfront along the Elizabeth River and a vibrant community center along Colley Ave. The majority of Ghent is residential but has become home to some of the City's finest restaurants and nightlife.
