2010 Homebuyer Tax Credit Details
In early November 2009, the federal government passed the Federal Homebuyer Tax Credit Extension. This extension extended the current tax credit of up to $8,000 for first time homebuyers, and added a provision for current homeowners.
Those who have lived in their home for 5 of the last 8 years are eligible for a $6,500 tax credit. This tax credit extension is enacted from November 7, 2009 through April 30, 2010. Buyers who have a written binding contract to purchase in effect by April 30, 2010 will have until July 1, 2010 to close on the home.
The purchase price of the home is limited to a maximum of $800,000 and buyers' income must be less than $125,000 for an individual or $225,000 for a married couple. Additionally, the homebuyer(s) must live in the home purchased under the tax credit for a minimum of 3 years.
